Overview

The Portlands Energy Centre (PEC) is a natural gas-fired generating plant that provides 550 megawatts of electricity for homes, businesses, hospitals and schools in Toronto (TransCanada stake is 275 megawatts). Primarily operated during periods of peak demand, PEC has a “high efficiency factor,” meaning it maximizes fuel to produce electricity as efficiently and affordably as possible. This results in lower fuel usage and lower emissions – a win/win for the people of Canada’s largest city.

Community Spirit

Rehabilitating a former brownfield site

As part of our commitment to the people of Toronto, in 2011 PEC began planting upwards of 3,000 Indigenous trees and shrubs on what was formerly a brownfield site. These plantings have encouraged wildlife to return to the area and contribute to a cleaner environment for all.

Community Spirit

Sponsoring community associations

PEC is a proud sponsor of many fundraising initiatives in Toronto. Over the years it has supported groups including the Toronto Beaches Lacrosse Club, the Ride to Conquer Cancer, Earth Rangers and the Daily Food Bank.

Community Spirit

Protecting air and water

With a vision to maintain a positive impact on land, air and water, PEC works with the City of Toronto and the Ministry of the Environment to monitor E. coli in Lake Ontario. The facility has also designed its water intake system to minimize risk to fish in the waterways.

Providing a home for honeybees

Under the guidance of the resident beekeeper, PEC houses six large colonies of honeybees, which help pollinate the 21 hectares our facility sits on, a community garden, Tommy Thompson Park, Cherry Beach and surrounding areas. We even sell our honey at Toronto’s St. Lawrence Market.

Documents and Maps

The Portlands Energy Centre uses a highly efficient natural gas-fired turbine to generate electricity and keep the busy city of Toronto supplied with energy. PEC is located in the Portlands district of Toronto, Ontario, on the shores of Lake Ontario.
